Strawberry Fields Jelly Roll Quilt

Oh, what a beauty!
Her story...

Christmas 2011 I received one of the best gifts ever from my dear husband and children - a Strawberry Fields jelly roll!  My very first jelly roll! I was SO excited! But what to make with it??? It sat on my little shelf for a few years. Little ones got there little hands on it and "disturbed" its perfectness. I started a board on pinterest and over the years pinned pics of various quilts made with Strawberry Fields by Fig Tree for Moda fabrics. My heart became set on seeing it made up into strip sets yet I couldn't settle on a pattern. I didn't want it to be "boring." So many times I almost cut into it but got interrupted and lost interest in whatever pattern I had settled on.

Then a couple years ago I was introduced to Instagram (you can find me there as freshdewdrops : ) and a whole new world of inspiration opened up (as if Pinterest wasn't enough ;) Anywho, in June of this year inspiration struck when my eyes lighted on a pattern by @corianderquilts called Prairie Blooms. I had found it! Pattern match for my Strawberry Fields jelly roll! Simple strip pattern yet pretty and unique. I set to work almost immediately.

Working out my strip sets.

Laying out blocks.

Nicely ironed quilt top (getting close to finish : )

Gentle wave quilting for the win - adds a bit of softness and flow.

It was SO much fun to finally make with this jelly roll.  I thoroughly enjoyed every step and working with all the different prints.  Here are a few of my favorite sets:

The red check is the best red check ever designed, in my opinion.

Love the buttery yellows and the not-blue-not-green pond color.

It's not often that I like a fabric line because of its name and actually love its colors and prints and everything, but Strawberry Fields has it all. It's special.

Strawberry season is one of my favorite times of year. This quilt will always hold a special place in my heart as it reminds me of sun-warmed strawberries, green grass, juice stained fingers, early summer breezes, and best of all - good times with my family.

Who can resist a cute rolled quilt : )

or a quilt blowing in the breeze?

Wintery quilt quilted and in use

My first "big" quilt finish and I'm so glad it is for us. I like it so very much and the rest of the family does as well.  It was meant to be finished when the Christmas tree went up after Thanksgiving, but it didn't get done. It wasn't even done for Christmas morning cuddling.  But that's okay because about two to three weeks ago (can't remember exactly...it was right after I finished the tree skirt) I finally got the quilting and binding finished.  Alleluia!!! Just in time for some serious deep winter cozying! (is that even a word?)

The children couldn't wait to use it.

This is seconds after I presented it for everyone's approval or disapproval.
I think they approve (and it wasn't even washed yet : )

On the recommendation of a couple of kind quilters, I checked out Quilter's Dream Select batting. Oh my! I really want to try this stuff. It sounds like a very lovely batting.  For this quilt though I ended up using what I had on hand - wool. I'm very happy with it. It is lighter weight than some baby quilts I have batted with cotton yet it is cozy warm. After a gentle wash it fluffed up and got all pillowy, almost like a comforter. With the brushed cotton top and the flannel backing this quilt is like cuddling up in an old flannel shirt. Heavenly!

Initially I was going to quilt diagonally one direction and then the other to get a hatch design, but after completing one direction it seemed to say that was enough. I liked it, really liked it. At first quilting a quilt this large (largest quilt so far for me) was a bit of a struggle.  Once I figured out how it drifted behind the  machine after being quilted and compensated for this, it went much smoother, especially if I made sure it didn't drag too much in my lap.  My new method of basting without taping down the back again also proved successful - not a single pucker in the backing or top! Ah! quilting heaven : )

All in all another awesome finish for the new year.

I told my husband I made it to be used, and used it is - every.single.day.
: )

PS:  I washed it in cold on gentle with three Color Catcher sheets. Whew! So glad I did. All the sheets were a lighter shade of the red of the backing flannel.  All the colors on the front remained their true color.  I don't know how they work, but Color Catcher sheets work.

Wintery quilt top November finish

Tada! I present my largest quilt top to date and it is for our living room. For some reason that thought makes me smile.

While browsing around Hingeley Road Quilt Shop (a local-to-me quilt shop) back in October, I spotted a partial jelly roll (only 31 strips) of an older Holly Taylor line - Frosted Memories, brushed - tucked away in a corner under the cutting table.  Could hardly believe my good fortune!  I soooo like this fabric line.  I carried it around for a bit before spotting some yardage that I thought would go well and that made my decision.  Home it came with me (of course, it helped that it was on clearance sale : )

In an effort to increase my odds of getting this top finished, I kept the pattern simple and was able to completely piece it before Thanksgiving. I really like how it  turned out even though a couple strips are out of place from their originally assigned location. Now my goal is to get it quilted over this coming weekend so that we can enjoy it during this Advent/Christmas season into late winter.  I have a red flannel all ready to go as the backing.  My final dilemma decision is which batting to use - cotton for a little extra weight (is it heavy enough with the brushed top and flannel back?) or wool for fluffiness and potentially more cuddliness??? Decisions, decisions...

Thanks for stopping by.

Fandango Table Runner

Broke into a Fandango jelly roll, added a little bit of solid yardage strips and came up with this table runner.

Neglected to write down the finished size - 18" x 43"...I think.

Love how the quilting turned out and am thrilled with the corners.

Think I have finally figured out how to get a good looking miter on the back. They just look much neater and and lay flatter.

Gifted this tablerunner to a lovely cousin and her new husband.

Finally have a finish to link up with Megan's monthly jelly roll party @  Crooked Seams. Yippee! Skippee!
