Check Plus quilt top

 Check Plus quilt pattern

Check Plus, another fun pattern by Meadow Mist Designs, launches today. You can find all pertinent details on Cheryl's blog.

The plus-within-plus block drew me in instantly and I quickly volunteered to test this pattern for Cheryl. I have made up a few of her patterns now and am never disappointed - easy to follow, quick cutting and piecing, and clean, high-impact designs. Check Plus was no different.

Easy cutting.

Simple piecing (very little ripper usage required on my part : )

On a side note - seams matched up like a breeze and ironed flatter than usual for me. Could pre-pressing with Best Press be the magical key to flatter seams???

This was a fun, quick quilt top. I'm very pleased with the results.

I highly recommend quilt patterns by Cheryl over at Meadow Mist Designs. Her patterns are clear and easy to follow.

Baby Sea Stars quilt

Thank you all for stopping by and giving your input regarding binding.
The giveaway winner is Debbie - Sheltered Stitches. Congratulations, Debbie!

Thanks for stopping by to check out my version of Sea Stars, the newest pattern release by Cheryl over at  Meadow Mist Designs. I was excited to test another this pattern for Cheryl. First, I'm drawn to her striking designs and her patterns are always clear, simple, and easy to follow. Second, I love half-square triangles. Third, for some time I have wanted to try a quilt with the plus sign block. Fourth, I thought it would be perfect in grays and yellows, a combination I've been wanting to try even though it is not my combination of choice at all.

How do you not spend all day putting a fabric selection together for a new quilt? Go to your local quilt shop 15 minutes before they close. No kidding. Worked for me. I pulled all the yellow and gray marbles they had, went with the three of each that seemed to want to be together, and tossed in Bella white from stash. Done! Whew, that was easy : )

Cutting my 1/4 yard cuts for the baby size went very smoothly and quickly. I love Cheryl's cutting instructions. So clear and simple. Trimming the HSTs was a breeze with my new Bloc-loc ruler. Love it! Can't recommend it enough if you like to use HSTs in your quilts.

I struggled a bit with piecing. Wrong moon or something. Every block needed ripper attention for some reason or other. I persevered and pushed through the mental fog to victory. Here it is all pieced and ironed. Really like how the blocks come together and form the stars. Ingenious! Am very happy with how the fabrics play together. Sometimes you just don't know how they are going to turn out, you know what I mean?

Quilted! Wasn't sure how to quilt this one. Thought about going with my favorite wavy lines, but it just didn't seem the right choice. Thought about single straight lines on the diagonal but wasn't sure how that would go with the velour backing (and no time for experimenting). So, straight line to the right of seams in both directions. Love how it turned out! Simple, doesn't distract from the block pattern, still soft and cuddly. Quilting success!

Cheryl has another winner with Sea Stars - striking design in a clear, easy to follow pattern. I love that about her patterns.

Giveaway! Closed.
Ok, folks. Time for a giveaway. For a PDF copy of the Sea Stars patterns how about giving me some binding input. What color would you bind this quilt with - one of the grays? one of the yellows? maybe white? For one entry comment letting me know what your binding choice would be. For an additional entry let me know if you are a follower, new or old.  Please make sure I have a way of contacting you. Winner will be drawn Monday, June 29.

Sea Stars can be found on Etsy, Craftsy, and Payhip.

Baby V's Quilt

Well, here goes. This is my entry for my first time participating in the Blogger's Quilt Festival: Fall 2012.  Am excited to be a part of this inspiration-filled event.  I have really been wanting to post about this special quilt and the deadline for the Festival is just the push I needed to get it done.

When I was gifted the kit (so wish I took a photo of the kit bundle before I untied it) for this quilt two years ago by a very kind and generous soul, I knew I wanted it to be for a special baby girl. I didn't know it was going to be a two year wait, but I'm so glad I was patient and waited for one of the sweetest little blessings to come into our lives - Baby V, my little niece and goddaughter. Because of the challenges that her family has been through in the last few years and because of the extra wonderful blessing she is, I wanted to make her and her family something special. This was it.

The kit consisted of strips of cotton wovens of varying weights and texture, minky, velour, and cotton velvet. The variety proved a challenge to work with, but in the end it was so worth it.  I made some modifications - I cut the kit strips into 6.5" squares and then cut some of these in half so that the squares would be offset. Also, I used the enclosed backing as binding and backed it with velour.

I quilted it myself using a walking foot and a slightly wavy stitch. I debated and debated about how to quilt it, but, in the end, I think the wavy stitch added just the right touch. Because of the velour backing I should have used more pins to baste (at least I think this might have helped) as there ended up being a few small tucks here and there, but I now know for future quilts and am quite happy overall with how the quilting turned out.

The different textures of the top combined with the velour backing make this an amazingly comfy and cuddly quilt.

It's a simple quilt. Simple is what I do. And sometimes, simple is best.

A quilt getting used as it was intended. That makes me smile : )

I am totally thrilled with how this quilt turned out and that it is getting put to use with some serious cuddle time.

What I'm working on this weekend - Second Weekend of Sep 2012

The hardest part for me with any project is getting started. Well, today in between household chores and meals, I got started on a quilt for my youngest nephew Noah. The critters on the focal fabric are just the cutest.

All the pieces including sashing and excluding binding are cut. Now that the cutting is done I'm excited to start piecing. Can hardly wait to see it put together.  I'm hoping I picked a good pattern and the brown earth-colored sashing works like I think it might. Tomorrow, hopefully, I will find some time to get this one pieced - that's my goal and I'm sticking to it. (It's the Packers opening season game so well see how it goes...)
