Barn quilts intrigue me. They always catch my eye when I'm out driving about. Whenever I see a barn quilt I'm reminding of growing up in the farm country of northwest Illinois near the Mississippi River. When you see a barn quilt, do you ever wonder why the farming family settled on that particular block and colors? I do. Does it mean something particular or special to them?
As a quilter I love charm packs and have quite the collection (and can't seem to stop adding to said collection : ). With a few charm packs you can make a full size quilt, but I only need so many large quilts. On the other hand, wallhangings, table toppers, runners - can you have too many of these? I think not! My goal is to have enough to change around for the seasons or as my mood changes and I just want to see something different or different colors ; )
It's a little too cold and snowy yet in Minnesota for spring, but, as it was time to pack Christmas away, I was in need of a wallhanging that was wintery yet cheerful. After a brief perusal of my charm packs I settled on Return to Winter's Lane by Kate & Birdie for Moda Fabrics and A Charming Barn Quilt came to life.
With a little bit of yardage for background, border, backing, and binding plus a charm pack (or a bunch of 5" squares) you have a quilt large enough for a wall hanging or table topper or even a baby quilt at 36" x 36". Use a mini charm pack instead and you have a cute 15" x 15" mini quilt. Such a versatile pattern!
With simple construction and easy layout A Charming Barn Quilt pattern is perfect for beginners wanting to stretch a little and try their hand at half-square triangles or for the more experienced who want a quick yet striking finish.
